Rio Rancho, a large and rapidly growing suburb north of Albuquerque, has added community splash pad facilities that serve its expanding family population. Santa Fe, at an elevation of 7,000 feet, has a noticeably cooler summer climate than lower-elevation communities, but the high-altitude sun is intense and splash pads remain popular during the warmest months. Las Cruces, in the southern Mesilla Valley near the Texas border, experiences some of the state's most intense summer heat, and community water play options there reflect the extended season possible in New Mexico's south. The season in most of New Mexico runs from late May through September, with the southern communities enjoying a somewhat longer operational window. New Mexico's monsoon season arrives in July and brings afternoon thunderstorms that can close outdoor splash pads temporarily — morning visits are the safest bet during monsoon months. Most municipal splash pads are free of charge. Sunscreen is essential at New Mexico's elevations, and staying hydrated in the dry desert air is important even when playing in the water.
